Ike Kulowiyi

Origin:  Savoonga, St. Lawrence Island

Culture:  St. Lawrence Island Yupik

Ike Kulowiyi was born on December 16th, 1954 to Dean and Gloria Kulowiyi.  Born to a whole family of artists, Kulowiyi learned to carve from his grandfather Albert.  His mother and brother Dean are also noted artists.  Ike and his brother spend a good portion of the summer digging for old, fossilized walrus ivory around Savoonga.  Kulowiyi also hunts for walrus and whale as a traditional form of subsistence and so is particularly skilled in making carvings that accurately convey the graceful movements of the animals in water.
