Hunter with Walrus BaseView more work by Gary Sockpick
This piece is carved from a dense whale bone rib. There is an inextricable link between man and animal in Inupiaq culture and it is expressed here with a part human, part walrus figure. The hunter's face is carved from a beautiful piece of walrus ivory and the black dot inlays are baleen. Below the hunter's ruff are two decorative mammoth ivory inlays, worn traditionally as fur adornments on parkas.
