Reclining Walrus View more work by David Alvanna
Carved from a piece of walrus ivory found under water, this stylized, medallion-shaped piece exhibits the inherent beauty in these tusks that are colored by nature after many years under the waves. On the back of the walrus, a small patch of the enamel is visible. The darker, blue-tinted dentine carries the coveted "rays," a striped pattern that sometimes forms on the fossil tusks. In the center of the piece, the speckled area is the center, or root of the tusk.
