Walrus Tusk With Hunter Scrimshaw View more work by Miller Kingeekuk
Miller Kingeekuk, the son of Fred Kingeekuk, comes from a long line of carvers and scrimshaw artists. Although young, Miller has already proven himself as a talented, up-and-coming artist in his own right. His scrimshaw work shows his amazing ability to render figures and animals with detail, clarity and depth. In this piece, Miller highlights the history of the continued subsistence hunt for walrus. Starting from the bottom he shows two walrus heads, above them is the hunter. At the top he has created a delicate design based on the hunting implement artifacts found on St. Lawrence Island. The partial tusk in is a baleen base.
