Whaling Scene on Walrus Jaw BoneView more work by Jerome Saclamana
This piece of old whalebone used to be the handle of a tool, but Saclamana has repurposed it and covered the artifact with scrimshaw scenes reminiscent of tusk engravings that were common in the 19th century. These compositions were characterized by simple figures in complex scenes often engaged in a hunt either by land or sea. Saclamana has chosen to depict a whaling expedition. The curved piece of bone sits on a walrus jawbone base.
