Bill Jones

Origin:  Shishmaref, AK

Culture: Inupiaq

Bill Jones was born on May 3rd, 1959. He is married to notable doll artist Ruby Eningowuk and has four children, two boys and two girls.  For over twenty years, Jones has been a village police officer in Shishmaref  and is a member of the city council.  He started carving soapstone in the 1970s in order to earn extra money and learned the trade from other carvers in the village.  Soon after, he began carving both walrus ivory and whalebone.  Currently Jones is best known for his high quality vertebrae carvings which are skillfully carved and structurally sound.
