Whale Shaman Mask View more work by Jerome Saclamana
Jerome has a knack for using traditional elements of King Island art and infusing it with his own, more contemporary style. He often splits a mask with a baleen strip, with an animal on one side and a human face on the other. The human half of this mask resembles a traditional King Island dance mask, wherein the combination of human animal traits is a cultural tenet. This ivory mask is made with a particularly rich piece of fossil walrus ivory with a strip of polished baleen down the center. It is accented with ptarmigan feathers and an addition tuft of baleen.
