Joe Kunnuk

Origin:  King Island, AK

Culture:  King Island Inupiaq

Joe Kunnuk was born on September 17th, 1940 to Agnes and Leo Kunnuk.  He was taught to carve by his father and by his grandfather, noted carver John Olanna.  Kunnuk is proficient in several subjects, including polar bear and seal scenes, hunters, rookeries and relief work, just to name a few.  In his non-figurative works, Kunnuk often includes a human face somewhere in the work as his own particular signature trait.
